Surfing Salty Water

Surfing Bali

The Bali surfing scene is still centered around the southern shore of the Island which boasts some of the most beautiful beaches and rolling waves. The first surfers arrived back in the 1930s and as reports of the sun, sand and surf got out more and more people were drawn to the Island. Nowadays, the surfers that come to Bali cover a wide range of experience, from absolute beginners to experienced professional wave riders. What they have in common is that they all arrive looking to get a great surfing experience.

For more professional surfers, there is the southern Bukit Peninsula while newbies can catch some of the smaller waves found in the lagoons. Bali is one of the best places to learn to surf – there are plenty of board rental shops and surf schools in the area. There is no shortage of surfing supplies either, with plenty of shops selling rash guards and wax and anything else you may need.

Padang Padang is one of the surfing community‘s favorites. You are guaranteed to get some outstanding barrels here and it is also really easy to access. As you pass through the astounding hollow rock entrance you will be amazed at how the beach opens up into an expanse of long, white sand. You can find Padang Padang between Bingin and Uluwatu.

The beach is regularly used to host the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang and other international events.

Uluwatu, located on Bali‘s Bukit peninsula, is well known because of the amazing Hindu temple that sits on the clifftop. If you visit here at sunset, be prepared for some of the most amazing views and the opportunity to watch the kecek, a traditional fire dance.

There are lots of scenic resorts and villas to rent here in this hilly region, all of which offer great views of the Indian Ocean. The hidden beaches and world-class breaks make it a mecca for surfers who flock to this pretty cliff-fringed coastline.

For those who are looking for some peace and quiet away from the crowds in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, booking a hotel here is a must. For golfers, there is a premier course in Pecatu.

Uluwatu beach gets quite crowded, especially when the waves are less than 1 meter high. Once it starts to form those amazing barrels, the place really comes into its own. It’s good to refer to tide charts or local knowledge on tide directions and you should also make sure that you are aware of the tide changes if you want to avoid being swept away towards Padang-Padang.
